1.7 m² to square feet

Hey there! Today, we’re going to learn about area, which is how much space something takes up. When we talk about gardens, knowing how much area you have is super important so you can plan what to grow!

In this case, we have a size of 1.7 square meters (m²), and we want to understand what that is in square feet. Square meters and square feet are two different ways of measuring area, kind of like how you might use inches to measure height and cm for the same height but in a different way.

Now, to convert from square meters to square feet, we use this helpful equation:

$$
1 \text{ m}² \approx 10.764 \text{ ft}²
$$

So, to find out how many square feet are in 1.7 m², we can multiply:

$$
1.7 \text{ m}² \times 10.764 \text{ ft}²/\text{m}² \approx 18.3 \text{ ft}²
$$

That means 1.7 square meters is about 18.3 square feet!

Why is this important? If you’re planning to plant a garden, knowing the area lets you figure out how many plants will fit nicely in that space without being crowded. So if you have 18.3 square feet to work with, you could plant a nice little patch of flowers or vegetables!

Here are 7 objects that have an area exactly equal to 1.7 m² or 18.3 ft²:

  1. A small garden bed that measures about 1.3 m x 1.3 m.
  2. A rectangular flower bed that is 2 m x 0.85 m.
  3. A large blanket that is about 1.5 m x 1.13 m.
  4. A kids’ sandbox that measures 1 m x 1.7 m.
  5. A table that is about 1.2 m x 1.42 m.
  6. A small yoga mat that has dimensions 1.8 m x 0.95 m.
  7. A tote bag with a flat area of roughly 1.7 m² when laid out.

Now you can visualize what 1.7 m² looks like in terms of objects you might see or use every day! Happy gardening! 🌱
